The Owl Lady

It is a story my young piano students never tire of hearing—the tale of Rocksie the Owl and her babies. I always share it when they begin learning a song called The Birch Tree, about a little bird who falls from its nest. Yet comfort is given, for the baby bird receives help.

“And the very same thing happened to the baby owls who lived across the street…”

It is now six years since Rocksie built her nest in my neighbors’ hanging planter, instantly becoming a neighborhood celebrity! With Fara and Charlie as the resident animal whisperers, mamma and babies were certainly in loving hands. They diligently watched over the nest and whenever a chick tumbled out, Charlie would rescue it and place it safely back inside.

We were all so excited when Rockelle and Way spread their wings and made their way into the world! We felt certain they would one day return to the neighborhood when it was their turn to become parents. But alas, year after year has passed without any owls.

Until this March… a little more than three weeks after Fara passed away.

During a recent gathering to honor her life, the neighbors all agreed that the return of the owls is Fara’s Gift of Love to us. And when a cardinal appeared soon after—a sign of  a loved one who has crossed over—our hearts opened even more.

Over the years, some of my piano students would see Fara outside as they arrived for their lessons. She always waved to them, and they would come in smiling, delighted to tell me they had seen “The Owl Lady!”

The neighborhood feels so empty without our Owl Lady. But somehow Fara is still here, letting us know that Love can never die.

💕Love, Lee
